SONG OF THE DAY: WHISTLE – BLACKPINK

“Hey boy, make ‘em whistle like a missile bomb bomb. Everytime I show up, blow up.” - Whistle, Blackpink
I need to say it beforehand: I’m a biased listener. Because they come from my favourite label, which usually release the songs suit my music taste, I’m simply biased. YG had put them on training for too long which is only raising the anticipation. I have been waiting them for years so now I have to check whether they could meet the huge expectation. I want their title tracks blow listener’s mind. I expect nothing but a solid debut.

Being the second YG’s girlgroup after 2NE1, I can’t help comparing them to their predecessor. The time I heard Teddy is the one who’s responsible for their debut, I was both relaxed and anxious. Teddy is a cool-headed hits maker so fans can be happy the quartet is in the right producer's arms, while I found it worrysome if their colour would be too identical to 2NE1 for being under the same producer.
Blankpink is finally here boombayah-ing our heart. Stop whatever you’re doing because the girls are in your area. The four membered group dropped their fantastic debut album contained club banger track “Boombayah” and my personal favourite: “Whistle”. First note, I’m glad by the fact they aren’t another cutesy concepted group. Second note, I’m glad they aren’t a copy version of 2NE1.

Boombayah is an okay but Whistle caught my attention even from its intro. Rather than usual Kpop debut single which is a dance track, this slow hiphop song highlighting each member’s vocal. The new jam is absolutely my cup of tea.

The Members Stunning Vocal/Rap Abilities

What a nice colour Rose brought to the song. So I finally acknowledging the mesmerizing vocal featured on GD’s "Without You" is no other than Blackpink’s main vocal, Rose. I remember I was crazy over her even since I heard her without-identity voice. Both her vocal colour and face give us mysterious vibe. 2NE1’s Park Bom sets the main-vocal bar so high so I hope Rose would show her vocal ability more in the future. I’m looking forward Rose showing stronger and more special vocal ability. By any chance, I’m waiting her to show us her guitarist image. That skill would be a bias list ruiner due to my affection for acoustic music and guitar.

Well known as the future bluechip of advertisement industry for her pure beauty and acting skill even before Blackpink debut, Jisoo proved she isn’t just about pretty face. Her set of talents let her become a versatile entertainer. She’s not just another visual—she’s the owner of sweet vocal. I found her extremely endearing with her keeping the balance of the group with her innocent look and sugar-like voice.

Lisa is the sweet surprise here. I only knew that she’s a vocalist, but she’s rapping! There’s more on her than insane dancing skill and vocal. She’s the ball of contradictions. I can feel her intimidating charisma behind her lovely attitude. Her cute face yet fierce image she displayed as a model and singer is her unique charm.

Okay, Jennie’s effortless rap cementing YG status as the house of best rappers. I love their rappers and Jennie is on the list now.Her groovy rap blended so well in the song although in this song, I love her singing more than her rapping. I’m glad YG didn’t let her soulful vocal being a waste by giving her singing portion beside rapping.

The Song

Lisa opened this song with her overflowing charisma. The melody is just fine. The pre-chorus and bridge made this song sounds special. Meanwhile the chorus (intentionally) contains catchphrase so people can remember this song since first time listening, the bridge shows off their distinctive vocal style. While being minimalist music-wise, I love how they put details into this song like whistle voice, whispering voice, bubble effect, and beat transition.

Personal Thoughts

- I can see the charisma on them eventhough not as charismatic as 2NE1’s members yet. Let the time  build their charisma. Also, I like how they boasted different appeals. Jennie is a mix of cute  and strong unnie, Jisoo is like a popular girl among men, Rose has girl next door aura, and Lisa  represents girl crush with her model-like vibe.
- While not trying to look pretty or cute, their visuals are slaying. Explanation isn’t needed. Hihi.
- My greedy side hoped a better song actually. But since they are just debuted, I will sit and wait. It’s just cruel  to put too heavy burden on rookie’s shoulders.
- I’m still surpised by the fact that they come from different countries to be finally together. Jennie  was lived at New Zealand, Lisa at Thailand, Rose at Australia, dan Jisoo at South Korea. Being  fluent in many languages would help them break global market.
- Lisa is my bias by now (I just can't predict what will happen later. Haha. It can’t be helped bias  changes easily because they are all talented.). Rose is the perfect candidate to ruin my bias list. She  could climb everyone’s bias list with  no mercy.
- I want them to win Best New Artist Award at year-end award events. I really mean it.
- I want to hear their harmonies (rap-vocal harmony or vocals harmony is just okay) in the near  future. I remember Winner awed me with their killer harmonies even since their debut album. So,  Blackpink when will your turn?
- I don’t know whether I have to be happy or sad. Blackpink debut timing is just…. I need mellow  time with Reply 1988 but they came out with happy songs. Hahaha. Move on isn't my thing right    now.  Reply 1988 is lingering on my mind.

After all, I’m enjoying the born of the powerful girlgroup. Congrats Blankpink for the solid debut. I hope you ladies could inspire us to be a powerful women, just like what 2NE1 did.
