PRIVILEGE VS USAHA

(Fyuhhh privilege is such a sensitive topic so I tried to write it carefully. I hope it doesn’t come out in the wrong tone.)

Beberapa waktu yang lalu, Aini Kolbiana yang merupakan salah satu kontributor INJO.ID menghubungi saya  terkait rencana memuat cerita mendapatkan CIA, CISA, dan AAS selama masa pandemi. Singkat cerita, wawancara via telepon itu terjadi di sebuah sore dan saya mengatakan bahwa pandemi bukanlah sesuatu yang mudah bagi siapapun (and I felt sorry to anyone because we have to go through such a difficult period) tetapi saya mencoba sebisa mungkin menyikapinya dengan positif.

Sadly, both reasons are not-so-innocently undermining the importance of effort and prayer. I still remember how some of my neighbors used to call every achievement I worked hard on as "bejo" (luck). "She is just plain lucky," they said nonchalantly. Let me say: I believe that privilege and luck do matter, but so do effort and prayer.

First of all, I acknowledged that privilege is real and matters. There is no way I can say that privilege doesn’t provide someone a head start. We all know that people with it achieve things easier than the rest. The problem is, we sometimes underestimate (or even disregard) their effort as if things just magically happen. We tend to oversimplify the process then blame privilege as the sole reason someone accomplishes something while the others do not. As a consequence, people harshly judge individuals with privilege as if they should feel less valid, guilty, or ashamed of attaining something because it was less complicated for them (and I don't think it's an appropriate action. Imagine their feelings seeing so many people undervalue them just because of something out of their control. Huhu.). Another consequence? People adopt a fixed mindset instead of a growth mindset. They think they couldn’t do, reach, or be something because of the absence of privilege which I believe isn't the case.

I am not here to underrate the importance of privilege or luck. However, as far as I know, the road to success is a multi-lane road. There are various lanes that can be taken based on our specific conditions. That's why, please refrain from thinking that the door of opportunities is already closed because of our current circumstances.

Secondly, effort and prayer are also real and matter. I must say that not having a privilege means there are additional obstacles to achieve something. However, most obstacles aren’t unbreakable (insert Blackpink Rosé’s quote: “Any obstacle is breakable”) and most difficulties aren’t unsolveable. So instead of feeling low because of our situation, we can also choose to work on it.

In conclusion, each of us has a specific way to succeed. Seek our own track and consistently run on it until we arrive there. May our dreams come true, everyone. Semangat :)
